I want to talk about some unforgettable YA books I have read, starting with the most well-known and most read, also the one I read first among the four I have picked: John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars.
The thing about YA, or Young Adult books, is that I never read any when I was a young adult, which is to say I never read any before I was in college. So everything I think about these books, I develop as an adult.
Does that affect my views? You bet it does. Does it matter very much? I don’t think so.
The Fault in Our Stars is simply one of the most beautifully told love stories I have read.
Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace are such wonderful characters in the book (and sorry, the film version don’t quite compare) you inevitably, literally, breathe, laugh, and cry with them along. If Harry Potter changes forever how a fantasy story looks like, Fault in Our Stars did the same for YA that are love stories.
And I love and admire John Green’s writing. One of my favorite passages from the book: “I’m in love with you,” he said quietly. “Augustas,”I said. “I am,”, he said. He was staring at me, and I could see the corners of his eyes crinkling. “I’m in love with you, and I’m not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know that the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.
I can’t imagine any girl who won’t be moved by this most courageous and direct confession of love ever. I was moved. And I am not a girl. Or a guy easily moved.
So that is the first of the four unforgettable YA novels I want to share with you. Stay tuned for more!
