Welcome to the party! My name is Fate Chan, the handsome free gamer as you know. This will be the start of a new Gaming series in The Free Reader Gamer, and I am very excited and proud to present and be your guide of our coming collective adventure — into the mysterious and unheard of Chinese gaming realm. In this series I will be replaying one of the best (and arguably the best indeed) classic in Chinese Video game history: The Scar of the Sky of the Xuan-Yuan Sword Franchise (軒轅劍外傳天之痕）created by DOMO group of the Taiwan PC Gaming leader Softstar Entertainment Inc.
Before we start, it feels only right to introduce to you what Xuan-Yuan Sword is. To save you the precious time and energy of yours to google and wiki it, here it is:
Xuan-Yuan Sword (Chinese: 軒轅劍, literally “Sword of the Yellow Emperor”) refers to a series of Chinese role-playing video games for personal computers developed by DOMO group of Softstar Entertainment Inc. (大宇資訊) based in Taiwan. The games incorporate elements of Chinese mythology as well as historic figures and events.
In time immemorial, the “Xuan-Yuan Sword” was created by Huangdi, the Yellow Emperor of ancient China to defend the ancient Chinese against warlord Chi You and his aggressive subjects. After Chi You’s defeat, the five-thousand-year-old history of China was secured, and the Sword was passed on from Huangdi to future generations to continue to defend the world against evil. Due to its great power, treacherous individuals often sought the Sword to further their own ends.
A recurring item of the series is the Monster Fusion Vessel, (Lian Yao Hu, 鍊妖壺 in traditional Chinese, or simply the Vessel, created by the goddess Nüwa in emulation of the Immortal Creation Ding to cleanse the world. Within the Vessel resides an immortal entity known as the Spirit in the Vessel. The Vessel’s powers are to absorb nonhuman creatures, and to transmute them into other creatures or items.
I think that should suffice –for the moment– to give you a little idea of what this is all about. If you are as clever and as observant like me, you will start to notice the magnificent scale of the game’s background as well as the cultural richness encompassed. And we haven’t even started playing!
Thanks to Softstar’s recent transplantation effort of its most eminent series from the PC to Android/iOS the game is now available as a standalone title in the Appstore as well as the Google Play store. And thanks to that, a complete and comprehensive replay and chronicle of the masterpiece is made possible for a full-time working fellow like me–playing on the go. Given the killer content and richness of the game, this will by no means be a brief run, so decide now: to continue or not. However, if you are willing to follow me into this truly magical detour, I assure you –with the pride of a serious gamer of over 15 years of devotion– this will be a ride worthwhile.
